How to Clean Wood Tables
How to Clean Wood Tables

How to clean wood tables all depends on how dirty the table is and what type of finish it has. If your tables are natural, stained wood you'll need to use a bit more work to care for them than one that's been sealed with a polyurethane coating. We'll work through the cleaning options for both from light dusting to a full deep cleaning.

Furniture Cleaning

If both types of table just have a little bit of dust on them you can clean them off with a static cloth. These cloths attract dust to them leaving a nice clean surface without any chemical residues.

How to Clean Wood Tables

If you want to shine the table up at the same time; then use a commercial furniture polish to shine everything up. Grab a can of spray wax and lightly mist the table surface. Let it sit for a minute then wipe it off with a paper towel. The wax will pull up any light dirt and dust and leave the table shining.

If your table is really dirty then you'll want to use a gentle wood soap. Mix up a bucket of soap and water. Scrub down the top of the table with a soft nylon brush. Be careful with brushing. Too stiff a brush can scratch the table surface. The scrubbing action plus soap will pull up any dirt as well as strip off any built up furniture polish. Next use a bucket of clean water to rinse all the suds off. For non sealed tables you'll want to dry the table off with a dry rag. Poly coated tables can air dry.

That's about the heaviest work you'll have to do for sealed tables. After everything is dry you'll just apply another coat of polish to it to bring back the shine.

Non-sealed tables require a couple additional steps after the cleaning. You'll want to oil the wood. Lemon oil is a good choice. It will help protect the table from water rings and leave a nice fresh scent. Be sure that the oil won't change the color of the wood before you go applying it to the table. Try applying a little bit of oil to the underside of the table first and let it set. If it looks good then you can go ahead with oiling the table top.

Put on a pair of gloves then soak a rag in lemon oil. Work the lemon oil into the table finish. You want to keep applying oil until the table won't absorb any more oil.

Once the wood stops taking up oil, wipe the surface down with some paper towels to absorb any wet spots. Don't set anything on the table for a few hours. The table will still be a little bit oily so you don't want to put a cloth place setting back down on the table until it dries out a bit.

How to clean wood tables is pretty straight forward. From a simple dusting job through a full deep cleaning it only takes a little bit of time and a couple supplies you can pick up at any store.

Office Cleaning Services - The Options You Have to Maintain Cleanliness
Office Cleaning Services - The Options You Have to Maintain Cleanliness

Office cleaning services cover a variety of cleaning areas in an office or a commercial building. The service may also include maintaining the different facilities in a building. The services are sometimes extended to include a wide array of establishments such as laboratories, warehouses, restaurants, factories, hospitals, schools, churches, and other business or commercial environments.

Furniture Cleaning

The main concern of office cleaning service is to maintain the cleanliness and to make presentable to customers and patrons a commercial or business establishment. To attain this objective, an office cleaning service offers the following specialized services:

Office Cleaning Services - The Options You Have to Maintain Cleanliness

Floor cleaning services
This service can include waxing and polishing in addition to the regular sweeping and mopping. This job can also include stripping the floor from previous wax and polish clean after which a new coat of wax and polish is applied in order to give the floor a new look. The process may involve the use of some chemicals and other cleaning equipment such as floor polishers and buffers.

It is important to bear in mind that there are many types of floor wax and polishers available so you have to choose the one that is best suited for the kind of floor you are cleaning. Not all floor wax and polish can be used for all types of floor. Using the wrong type may damage the floor instead of cleaning it.

For wooden floors, extreme care must be exercised as they can easily scratch and stain especially if the wood is not properly treated. If the wooden floor is well maintained, cleaning is easy as sweeping and mopping will do the trick of removing dust and dirt. However, wooden floors will require the use of non-abrasive cleaning materials to avoid scratching the floor.

Another area of floor cleaning service is tile and grout cleaning. When the tiles and grout are not well-maintained, there may be the need for the use of some chemical cleaners to do the job of cleaning them. It will be important to know the kind of tiles you are cleaning so you can choose the right cleaning material. There are cleaning solutions for tiles that will work just right for any kind of tiles and they are readily available in most hardware stores.

Window cleaning
It is a necessary task in making an office or any other commercial or business establishment presentable. A window that is dirty and full of streaks and grime will be a big turn off for clients who will enter an office area.

Window cleaning techniques come in different forms. Cleaning the inside and outside windows will require different methods. The outside area of a window is dirtier and even when it is already cleaned, it will still be prone to dust and debris.

Many types of window cleaning solutions are just soap in liquid form. The trend now is for environmentally friendly cleaning materials so it is now easy to find window cleaning solutions that do not contain ammonia, alkali, or solvents.

Furniture Cleaning
Office furniture cleaning usually involves dusting and wiping. When cleaning office furniture, it is important to start with the ones that are high before you start cleaning those that are lower so that dust will not fall on the areas that had already been cleaned. This saves you time and effort as you don't have to redo what you have already finished.

Furniture includes all items that can be moved and removed, including lamps and wall fixtures. These pieces of furniture can be cleaned by using dusters but you have to be sure that the dusters you will use are the types that attract dust and not just send them flying in the air. Microfiber dusters that attract dust are now available in the market. Vacuum cleaners may also be used in order to trap the dust into the cleaner.

In addition to dusting furniture, some polishing may also be required. Furniture spray and polishers are available in hardware stores and home furnishing stores. These are usually spray-on or wipe on and then wiped off to produce the desired effect. These products provide protection to furniture materials and also allow them to look new and clean.

There are different furniture polish and cleaners and it is necessary to make sure that the right furniture polish will be used for the right material. There are wood, leather, and metal polish for different furniture types. Leather furniture requires special care as they are not as sturdy as wood or metal. Abrasive cleaning materials must be avoided when cleaning leather furniture so that they do not scratch and damage the material.

Carpet Cleaning
Most office floors are carpeted and they require special care and cleaning. Carpet cleaning is not just about vacuuming; vacuuming is just one of the processes that can help you clean the carpet.

Aside from having a vacuum cleaner, you will still need the basic broom and dust pan when cleaning carpets. The broom and dust pan work well in cleaning out large materials off the carpet floor. This will be important in maintaining carpet cleanliness and can be used in between vacuuming of the carpet floors.

Carpet brushes are used in carpet care and cleaning as this will help rejuvenate the appearance of the carpets that you are cleaning. Carpet brushes can be manual or attached to a machine to make the use more convenient and more time efficient.

Blotting and dilution of carpet stain is one of the most common ways of cleaning and removing stain from carpets. This method, however, is so slow and time consuming especially if you are dealing with a big carpeted area. There are now machines that will help you with the problem of carpet stains. Wet vacuums work well in stain and dirt removal. It will be economical in the long run because you will be able to remove stain and dirt quickly and you can cover a large area in a short period of time.

Teak Furniture - The Proper Way to Care For & Clean It
Teak Furniture - The Proper Way to Care For & Clean It

Teak furniture is tropical hardwood that has a rich, golden honey color when new. However, as it begins to age and is exposed to the elements, the natural, beautiful color changes to a silvery gray patina. In fact, this is how you can distinguish finely aged outdoor teak furniture! The key with teak is that if you were to leave this silvery gray color on the teak furniture without being treated, you would never be able to get the lustrous honey, caramel back.

Furniture Cleaning

Although the color change does not affect the strength and durability of the piece, it does give your teak furniture a whole new look. Therefore, if you are going to own outdoor (or indoor) teak furniture you first want to decide if you want to maintain the original golden brown color or let your teak furniture acquire a silver gray patina as it weathers.

Teak Furniture - The Proper Way to Care For & Clean It

To extend the beautification of the lustrous honey color, a leading manufacturer, Kingsley-Bate, recommends using a protector. Their teak protector is a "cosmetic application" and helps the furniture maintain its color for a season. Reapply as needed.

Kingsley-Bate does not recommend using a teak oil on outdoor furniture because of the high maintenance involved in this process. Every three months, teak oil will need to be reapplied to maintain the brown finish. Kingsley-Bate also states "oiling outdoor furniture may cause mildew or irregular coloring."

When left outdoors without a teak protector or teak oil, your outdoor furniture will turn silvery-gray. This process takes approximately 9 months and depends on the exposure to certain elements such as rain and sun. If this is look you wish to maintain, the only care needed for your teak furniture is a periodic cleaning.

The recommended cleaning solution is a 75/25 mixture of a mild laundry detergent with bleach in water. Only a soft bristle brush should be used. When your deck furniture is clean, rinse the entire piece well enough to remove any dirt or cleaning solution residue. This process is adequate for general cleaning of your furniture regardless if it is golden brown or has weathered.

Kingsley-Bate offers a product for those who allowed their patio furniture to weather to a silver gray and now want to return it to the original color. Regardless of how long your furniture is outside, Kingsley-Bate's teak cleaner will restore your furniture to the honey brown color. The process is simple and does not require heavy scrubbing.

Some people want to stain or paint their teak furniture. Manufacturers frown upon this as the natural oil occurring in the teak prevents the paint or stain to adhere to the wood. If you absolutely must have your teak furniture painted or stained, you should go to your local marina store and confirm what they recommend to use.

While some people will allow their teak furniture to remain outdoors all year long, there are those that recommend it be brought indoors. However, if you do keep it out, then make sure it does not sit on wet ground and that puddles of water are not allowed to pool on the furniture. But the great thing about teak is that since it is a dense hardwood, it naturally resists warping, shrinkage, swelling, and rot. In addition, it contains a high oil content the continually preserves the wood, which is why you can leave it outdoors without much problem. The smooth finish does not splinter and looks absolutely beautiful.

Teak patio furniture is luxury outdoor furniture. You want to make certain you take care of your investment properly as this is intended to last for years.

How To Clean Your Carpet Yourself Correctly
How To Clean Your Carpet Yourself Correctly

Carpet cleaning overall is a job that is best left to professional cleaning companies. They have proper equipment, chemicals and the training to get the job done. Some people just insist on doing everything themselves though. If you are one of those people this article will give you some tips to help you get the job done right.

Furniture Cleaning

The first thing you need to do is prep the carpet correctly. This is the most important and most overlooked step but prep is everything. Move us much furniture out of the way as possible. Do a few rooms at a time. Do not try to do too much with a rental machine as you will end up rushing and doing a poor job. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly and slowly to get as much dry soil out as possible. Vacuum in all directions. Dry soil is much easier to remove than the mud you will get if you spray water on the dirt.

How To Clean Your Carpet Yourself Correctly

Now that you have the carpet vacuumed you are ready to apply your prespray. Most machines say to add the shampoo to the tank but this just forces you to rinse the carpet with a shampoo leaving a massive amount of residue behind. Instead get a clean pump up sprayer and spray the shampoo or cleaner on the carpet. Let it dwell for 5 to 10 minutes. Now fill the machine with plain water and extract the prespray from the carpet. Be thorough making several cleaning passes followed by a few extra drying passes to remove as much moisture as possible.

The last step is to dry the carpet as quickly as possible. Turn on ceiling fans and use portable fans if you have them. If it is a nice day you can open the doors and windows to allow for good ventilation. If it is a humid or rainy day you shouldn't even be cleaning the carpet.

That's all there is to it. Now you just need to wait for the carpet to completely dry before putting it back to use and before putting the furniture back. Never place furniture on damp carpet and be careful of the slip hazard of wet carpet. Good luck.

I decided to put together some patio furniture and a gazebo for my backyard, and figured it might be a good time to try out the time lapse feature on my old Kodak P880 camera. I've had the camera for 4 years and never once tried that particular feature. The photos were taken over two afternoons, a total of about 4 hours. Keen-eyed observers will note the wardrobe change. :) There are also a couple of gaps where the timer stopped or the battery died, but otherwise this is most of it. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to cleaning up the rest of the yard and landscaping it.Furniture Cleaning

Teak Furniture - How To Clean Your Indoor Furniture
Teak Furniture - How To Clean Your Indoor Furniture

There are plenty of tips for keeping your outdoor teak furniture clean, but what about your indoor teak furniture? Do you have a cleaning plan?

Furniture Cleaning

While it is durable and will put up with years of use and abuse, putting it through the proper spring-cleaning plan will help it continue to hold it's beauty for years to come.

Teak Furniture - How To Clean Your Indoor Furniture

Many people who have teak furniture in their homes purchased it because they believed they could have very beautiful furniture that didn't need a lot of baby-sitting. Unlike other tables that need regular oiling, cleaning and care, you can literally leave teak furniture for months, or even years, and it will remain as strong as it was when you first got it.

This may have you thinking there is no reason for putting your teak furniture through a spring-cleaning regimen. After all, if teak will stand up to the elements for centuries, why would it not hold up to being in your home for all that time?

The truth is, it will. You could well ignore your teak furniture and let it hold up on it's own for all the years you keep it around, but you also may notice that over time, the teak wood, left to it's own devices, will change it's appearance a bit. Indoor selections will darken over the years. While it may start as an orange-brown wood, it will change to a dark brown shade.

If you want to stop this change, and keep your teak furniture looking as it did since the day you brought it home, you will have to give it an annual cleaning and oiling.

Cleaning

The first thing you need to do is thoroughly clean your teak furniture. While you may dust your teak furniture off regularly, that doesn't mean dust, dirt and other debris hasn't made its way into the spaces in the wood. This is especially important if your what you have includes tables where meals are eaten. Small crumbs of food can work their way into the spaces between pieces of wood that were used to make up the table. Those food particles will break down over time and may well cause damage to your wood.

The removal of dust and debris in from your furnishings should begin with a wiping down of the furniture with warm soapy water. Then look for particles that may have gotten caught in between pieces of wood and remove those particles.

Once it is clean, allow it to dry completely.

Now you can decide if you want to allow your teak furniture to change colors or maintain that orange-brown shade it came with. The way you can maintain your original color is to re-oil it after the cleaning. Teak wood has a high level of natural oils, but by adding a new layer after you have cleaned and dried your it, you will offer a little extra support, keeping it looking new for years to come.

How to Wrap Furniture for Moving and Storage
How to Wrap Furniture for Moving and Storage

Regardless if you hire professional movers or do it yourself, it is good to know how to wrap the furniture and what to expect. We sell moving supplies and often hear questions: - How many moving blankets do I need? Which moving blanket should I use and how do I wrap my furniture?

Furniture Cleaning

The way to wrap furniture for moving depends on specifics of your move. Is it interstate move, across the country, or local moving around the block? Loading PODS or international shipping container, or moving to long term storage?

How to Wrap Furniture for Moving and Storage

If you are getting ready to move and concerned about safely moving your household goods this series of articles will show in details how to wrap your furniture for any large or small move. People sometimes underestimate amount of packing required for a moving job, but it is important to pack your personal belongings properly. I have been in the moving business for over 20 years, moved hundreds of families personally as a foreman and driver, and then thousands more as an owner of a moving company, both moving locally and moving interstate. I was teaching my movers the best and most efficient ways of handling and wrapping furniture, wrapping with blankets, crating, boxing, you name it.

Movers. Contrary to some statements I came across in other articles, Movers do care about your shipment, in most cases foreman is personally responsible to pay for your damages and movers also know that if something gets broken it is unlikely that they get any tips. At the same time movers do not have any sentimental attachment to your belongings and treat precious to you items as anything else. Their main goal is to secure the goods in a way that it will not break and will be easy to load. Therefore it is important to make a foreman (moving crew leader) which items require special care.

Do not expect movers to see your household goods the way you see it. The movers simply do not have time to consider how delicate each and every item might be. For example a bottle with exotic sand, layered by the color or even in a special design, will be ruined if simply laid on its side. Movers will make sure to pack the bottle that it will be safe, but they might not realize that the sand layers inside the bottle are not fixed and might mix into an ugly mess from vibration in the truck. It is true that most damage occurs while carrying, loading and unloading, but it is also true that if movers (or yourself) do not load the truck properly some items will get damaged in transit.

Word of caution about shopping for a moving company: If you have valuable furniture to move - do not look for cheap movers, look for good ones. Inexperienced movers or movers with bad reputation compete on price, not on professionalism. Good movers deserve to be paid well. As the saying goes - you get what you paid for.

Moving Packing Supplies. There is variety of packing supplies available: bubble sleeves, plate cell packing kits, foam peanuts, bubble craft etc. We are not trying to cover 100% of the packing supplies, but only the most popular that are used by movers and that you can and should expect to find in a moving truck: Blankets, Boxes, paper, bubble wrap and Shrink wrap, plastic covers. With this set of supplies you can pack and move any type of furniture, china or artwork.

Moving Blankets. Moving blankets is mover's "tool of the trade". If you are moving locally and hiring a professional moving company you should expect them to show up with blankets and you should not be charged for it. But if you are moving long distance (interstate moving) or to storage, then purchasing your own moving blankets might be a good idea. Moving Blankets can be of two major kinds: Quilted or padded moving blankets and Non-Quilted,, also called Skins or Space Savers. Each has its use. Quilted Moving blankets usually come in 72 x 80 inches size and differ depending on the outer fabric and amount of filler, the heavier the blankets the more filer they have and the more protection they offer. Cheap moving blankets are made with nonwoven outer fabric and very light filler. These blankets can be very good if you are planning to place your stuff in long term storage or a small move.

Economy moving blankets provide adequate protection and do not take much room in the storage. For long distance or interstate moving where interstate carrier charges by weight the advantage is that these blankets are much lighter than regular moving blankets. For heavy solid wood furniture, leather couches, heavy dining tables etc. it is better to get heavier, thicker blankets that will provide better protection against bumps and dents. If you move often, moving blankets with woven outer fabric much more durable moving blankets and will serve much longer. Non-quilted moving blankets can be made out of felt or burlap on one side and felt on the other. These should not be discounted especially if your main concern the furniture rubbing against each other. If you are packing your own pod, or container - you can use space savers with great success.

Another option is paper moving blankets. Paper packing blankets are constructed of two outer layers of brown kraft and three inner layers of light weight paper. The three inner layers can consist of newsprint, light weight kraft, tissue, bogus, or non woven papers. Most people are not even aware of paper blankets to be used for moving, meanwhile it is a very good alternative to quilted moving blankets, especially if you are moving only once or sending your goods to a long term storage or moving overseas. Paper blankets are breathable, provide good protection and 100% recyclable.

Boxes. Moving boxes can be single wall, such as Book boxes, Linen boxes etc. or double wall, such as China Boxes, TV boxes, Wardrobe boxes etc. Double wall boxes are much stronger and hold more weight. But please DO NOT try to load them to capacity. Loading Wardrobe box full of books is not a good idea. Name of the box is very suggestive: Book boxes (1.5 cubic feet) are for books, Small Linen boxes (3.1 c.f.) or Large Linen boxes (4.5 c.f.) are for folded clothes, towels and linen, China boxes, 5,.2 c.f. is for fragile items, and wardrobe box ( come in 10.1 c.f. or 15 c.f. and 4 ft tall) is for hanging clothes. And of course there are picture boxes, lamp boxes, mattress boxes and a whole line of all kinds of specialized boxes, corners etc.

Cushioning Materials. When you pack fragile items in a box - you need something to provide cushioning. Most popular is Bubble wrap and Blank newsprint. Blank newsprint or white paper comes in 5, 10 or 25 lbs bundles. Blank newsprint is the best for packing kitchenware, plates, china, fragile items, or simply filling empty spaces in a box. Bubble wrap come in 12 or 24 inch wide rolls and with various bubble sizes. Movers mostly use 0.5 inch bubble wrap 24 inches wide. Bubble wrap is good for wrapping electronics or large pieces of glass.

Plastic Covers. Plastic covers for moving would include Shrink wrap or stretch wrap and Plastic mattress cover, plastic sofa cover or plastic chair covers. Shrink wrap - is widely used in shipping to keep a load on a pallet together as one unit and not to allow it to fall apart or items disappear from shipment. In moving furniture shrink wrap was originally used to keep items with small parts or opening doors or drawers together. Then it became a substitute for plastic covers to wrap mattresses. It is not at all better than a plastic mattress cover, but it is more profitable for a moving company: it cost much less to buy a roll of shrink wrap, but it takes longer to wrap plus mover can charge more for each item wrapped. Movers might even wrap shrink wrap on top of furniture already wrapped in blankets. It looks good, but it is very expensive and absolutely useless. If you put your items to storage shrink wrap is actually damaging to the furniture, because it traps the moisture and the furniture can actually rot under the shrink wrap if stored long enough. I would strongly recommend using mattress covers, because even if it will be wrapped in a blanket - you do not know what was wrapped in that blanket before. And mattress is what you sleep on. Also sofas with light colored upholstery would be better off if you cover it with plastic sofa cove before wrapping in the furniture blankets. Sometimes the color bleeds off the moving blanket onto upholstery.

SUMMARY: When preparing for the move consider specifics of your move and consider the furniture you want to wrap. Need to save space? - Get space savers or paper blankets, need better protection - get premium quality thick moving blankets. Want to keep your fragile safe - pack them in double wall strong boxes with a lot of cushioning materials Want your keep furniture clean - use Plastic furniture covers. In the next article we will go over specifics of wrapping various items of furniture.

Cleaning Outdoor Furniture - Bird Droppings
Cleaning Outdoor Furniture - Bird Droppings

Cleaning outdoor furniture becomes a regular task during the warm months when we are using our outdoor living areas more often. There are also plenty of birds around who leave their calling cards in the form of bird droppings on outdoor furniture and fixtures.

Furniture Cleaning

Prevention is the best way. By putting everything away after use you will keep it in better condition for longer. However, the fact is most of us are not going to be carting outdoor furniture backwards and forwards from storage every time we want to use it.

Cleaning Outdoor Furniture - Bird Droppings

Bird Dropping Damage

Just like on the paintwork of your car the acidic bird droppings can cause lasting damage if left unkempt for a period of time. Besides that, it looks very unsightly and it can be a little embarrassing to be offering someone a seat covered in mess.

Bird dropping in large amounts can also pose a health risk so be sure to never try to clean while dry as the inhaled dust can make you ill.

Once a Week Habit

Getting into the routine of cleaning your outdoor furniture as you do your indoor areas. A once a week wash over with mild detergent and warm water will go a long way to keeping things fresh and only require a quick wipe over just before use in some cases. Many times your outdoor furniture will be ready to be used at anytime.
This gives you a regular opportunity to check and see if any repair work or restoration work might be needed.

Furniture Types

Outdoor furniture is going to be made of wood varieties, metal, plastic, hardwearing materials like canvas, or a combination of these. Recycled plastic furniture is a fantastic way to help the environment and get durable affordable furniture.

You can safely know that in all cases a good wash with a mild detergent in warm water will suit all types of furniture on a regular basis to keep bird dropping under control. You may need to give vinyl cushions a wash in the basin and leave them to dry in the sun for a day or two. The sun is a natural killer of mould and mildew.

If your cleaning regime hasn't been regular use a low pressure hose and a scrubbing brush to loosen and wash away droppings. Add borax or bicarb soda to the water for a natural alternative. Dishwasher detergent has some bleach for white plastic if you want to keep them white. But don't use pure bleach or harsh cleaners on vinyl or plastic as they will gradually break it down, and also can leave discoloration.

After Clean Protection

This makes cleaning the next time so much easier. Depending on weather conditions once or twice a year is good for a thorough clean and applying other protective measures, in harsh conditions perhaps every three months is better.

* Wood/bamboo/Wicker - If these are painted, or varnished, look for chipped or worn areas to repair by sanding and touching up. If the wood is bare it will need some type of protection. This can be done in several ways. You may choose to oil it regularly by rubbing in something like linseed oil with a soft cloth. Some choose to use soft waxes which work nicely.

* Metals - like wood these might be painted, if so look for any weak spots regularly. Any mild soapy water will be fine. If the bird droppings are built up over time you may need to use a high pressure hose and wear protective gear to avoid eye and inhalation problems.

* Plastic/resin/vinyl - there are really some fantastic designs on outdoor furniture being made with these today. You'll find waterproof cushions as well, but still give them a wash over now and again and leave to dry in the sun. Soft waxes can sometimes be suitable for resins but not always good for the vinyl, so read cleaning recommendations on the product.

* Material/Canvas - again a light scrub with warm water and mild detergent will suffice here. Umbrellas can do with the same treatment. Wet down first and use a soft scrubbing brush. Be sure they are dried properly before storing away.

Show the same concern for outdoor furniture as you do for your furniture inside and you will have it for many years. You might even consider some sort of cover to drape over them while not in use. Be sure it is well fastened in windy areas.

Making PVC Furniture - Measuring, Cutting and Gluing Techniques

Making PVC Furniture - Measuring, Cutting and Gluing Techniques
Making PVC Furniture - Measuring, Cutting and Gluing Techniques

Making indoor/outdoor furniture and other projects with PVC pipe is a very rewarding hobby. You'll be surprised at how many useful and money-saving items you can craft. For example... home furnishings, toys, yard 'n garden things, shop equipment, games and on and on.

Furniture Cleaning

But, before you begin, here are some techniques that will make working with this low-cost, versatile material quicker and much easier.

Making PVC Furniture - Measuring, Cutting and Gluing Techniques

Measuring and Cutting

1. Always cut the longest pieces first. That way, you'll be able to use more of the pipe.

2. Mark the length to be cut with a pencil.

3. Cut with a standard PVC pipe cutter. The easiest to use is a simple ratchet-style cutter available at most hardware stores.

4. Line up the pencil mark with the pipe cutter blade, then cut on the inside edge of your mark.

Option: You can also cut the pipe with a hack saw. To make a straight cut, place the pipe into a miter box. Then wedge a piece of scrap wood between the pipe and the side of the miter box to brace it securely. Cut on the inside edge of your pencil mark.

Note: When cutting plastic pipe with power equipment, wear a proper dust mask or respirator to protect against particulate dust.

Then, remove any burrs with a medium flat file or rough sandpaper. Use a rat-tail file for the inside of the pipe, if needed.

Gluing

When building PVC projects, sometimes in haste we glue fittings that end up facing the wrong direction. Of course, this leads to ruined fittings, delays and, essentially, having to start over. It happens and it's frustrating. So here's how I solved the problem.

1. After cutting the lengths of pipe, "dry-fit" sections of your project as you progress. Make sure the lengths are correct and the fittings are facing the proper way. Use a carpenter's square to guide you, if need be.

Tip: If you find an inserted pipe stubborn to remove, attach a vice-grip on the pipe with the PVC fitting clamped in a bench vice, then separate by twisting. Or, use two vice-grips.

2. When you're certain the section you're working on is correct then, using a yellow marking pencil, draw a line an inch, or so, along the pipe up and over each fitting. This serves as an easy alignment guide. Now take the section apart and lay out the pipe and fittings to prepare for gluing.

3. Swab a light amount of glue to both the fitting and pipe, insert the pipe into the fitting, twist slightly and line up the yellow markings. PVC glue (also called cement) dries fast, so you'll have to be quick. Hold it together for a few seconds. Then wipe off any excess glue immediately with an old rag, which will also remove the yellow line. By the way, since these are not plumbing projects, you do not have to use PVC primer.

Tip: The gluing procedure I just mentioned is the proper way to fasten pipe to fitting. However, that said, I apply glue to the inside the fitting only. Use your own judgment, but in 25+ years none of my PVC projects have ever come apart. Applying glue to both parts is, to me, overkill and wastes glue.

I mentioned that I swab the inside of the fitting only. Why? Because when you insert the pipe most of the glue flows to the inside. If you swab the pipe instead, the glue would ooze outwards toward your hands. My way is neater and cleaner.

4. Normally, the pipe slides into the fittings easily. For those time when you're not certain if the pipe has seated against the fitting wall, quickly and gently tap the opposite end of the pipe with a dead-blow hammer or wooden mallet.

5. Work in sections. For example, when building a chair I assemble the left side first then the right side. Finally, I secure the connecting lengths of pipe to both sides.

6. If, when making a PVC chair, you use sling material for the back and seat, be careful not to glue one side of the project until after you've attached the material to the frame.

But what if you don't want to use PVC glue? For some projects (example, doll furniture) applying one tiny spot of super glue to the inside of the fitting will do just fine. I don't recommend it, however, for projects that will get heavy use.

Also, I've had good luck with polyurethane glues, which can give you plenty of time (up to 4 hours) to adjust your project before it cures. So far, the two projects for gardening I've tested have held up well. Again, you don't want to use it for heavy-use projects like swing-sets, chairs, and so on.

Mastering these simple techniques for working with PVC pipe will ensure your PVC furniture and other projects will turn out perfectly.

How to Clean Your Lazy Boy Recliner
How to Clean Your Lazy Boy Recliner

Now that you have purchased your recliner or recliner covers you will need to know how to take care of them to make your furniture look nice and to last longer. Whether your recliner material is made out of leather, cloth, or any other material you know how to clean it yourself without having to come too much out of your pocket.

Furniture Cleaning

Most recliner slipcovers nowadays are very easy to take care of. All you have to do is take them off and throw them into the washing machine. If you did not buy a slip cover to protect the upholstery on your recliner then you can use the following to clean and take care of your recliner upholstery.

How to Clean Your Lazy Boy Recliner

Cleaning Cloth Material

1. Make sure that you remove all of the cushions that are loose.

2. You will have to get rid of the loose dirt by using a brush or a vacuum that has a brush attachment that goes with it.

3. Make sure you vacuum all of the surfaces on the recliner making sure you get in the side, back, arms, and cracks.

4. Vacuum the cushions to and then replace them back on the recliner.

5. You can use a mild detergent but make sure that it does not have bleach or whiteners in it. Add one-fourth cup of detergent with some warm water. Use a hand blender or a mixer so that you can create suds from the mixture. You will have to make suds because this is what you will be cleaning the upholstery with.

6. With a soft cloth or sponge apply the suds to the material and lightly scrub over it. You will see the dirt come up in the suds.

7. Use a dry towel to remove the suds and the extra moisture.

8. Lastly allow the furniture to dry overnight.

To Clean Leather Upholstery

1. Use a mild facial soap with warm water to clean your leather upholstery. Use a soft rag that will not harm your furniture. When cleaning make sure you really pay attention to the headrest and the arm rest where most of the dirt and body oils will accumulate.

2. Rinse with lukewarm or cool water and dry off with a towel.

3. When cleaning leather make sure that you use distilled water so that the chemicals in regular tap water will not cause any discolorations.

4. After you cleaned and rinsed the leather wipe it off with a white towel to make sure that you know it is clean.

5. Every now and then you can apply one part vinegar and two parts of linseed oil to clean your furniture.

When you are done cleaning your leather upholstery it will be a good idea to apply a leather protectant to your furniture. Wipe up the spills as you make them, do not wait until they have embedded in the material. Never use baby oil on your furniture or baby wipes on your leather.

If these cleaning techniques do not work for the material on your furniture or recliner then you can search the internet for more or hire a professional that will clean your furniture. Just make sure you read the manufacturers instructions and make sure you take extra cautions when putting substances on your recliner upholstery.

Quick and Simple Ways to Cleaning Wood Blinds

Quick and Simple Ways to Cleaning Wood Blinds
Quick and Simple Ways to Cleaning Wood Blinds

The use of wood blinds is very common these days and tend to be ideal for various areas and rooms. While they are easy to use anywhere in the house, they still need to be cleaned properly in order to ensure their durability and to be able to maintain their appearance. The good news is that cleaning wood blinds is not a hard task. How easy to clean them depends on the kind of blind design and the medium that is used, and among the more common designs are the wooden slats and woven wood. For those with slats a fair amount of work will be needed in cleaning wooden blinds.

Furniture Cleaning

How To Clean Wooden Slats

Quick and Simple Ways to Cleaning Wood Blinds

It can be a very tiring task to clean wood blinds with slats and it may even need you to take them down from their installation in some cases where they may be too dirty to clean the normal way. Cleaning them daily may only need you to brush off the dust with a cleaning cloth but for cleaning wood blinds with slats it may be necessary for you to take them apart and clean the pieces individually.

There is another way of cleaning blinds other than the common way of using a dry cloth to remove the dust. This method is to wipe the blinds with a damp cloth and in turn use dry cloth to clean off the moisture. This wood blind cleaning procedure of using a dry cloth helps prevent the inadvertent seepage of water into the wood. If water seeps into the wood it may result in discoloration and warping of the wood, and this is certainly something to avoid as it will damage the beauty of your blinds. When cleaning wood blinds such as these is always best to wipe dry any water or liquid residue on the slats in order to avoid such problems.

Another method you can use to conveniently clean wood blinds is vacuuming. By attaching a brush feature on the end of the vacuum, it is easier to clean the blinds. All one requires to efficiently clean wooden blinds by vacuuming is to sweep the brush head across the slats, and is ideal for daily cleaning of lightly accumulated dust. If the dust has already settled into the slats then the previous methods should be applied.

How To Clean Woven Blinds

For a number of wood blinds [http://www.houseimprovementguide.com/category/furniture/blinds] they may be woven and could present a challenging task of cleaning. However, in reality the cleaning of woven blinds is considerably easier compared to cleaning slatted blinds. The use of vacuuming is perhaps the simplest and certainly easiest way to clean woven blinds, and is the perfect method for daily cleaning. But if the dust has made its way in and settled in the crevices then the use of a bristle brush may be required to clean the woven wood blinds. For this type cleaning it is definitely a lot easier to bring down the woven blinds and then clean them instead of leaving the blinds installed then trying to clean.

Cleaning Microsuede Naturally

Cleaning Wood Kitchen Cabinets
Cleaning Wood Kitchen Cabinets

Cleaning wood kitchen cabinets is really as easy as 1,2,3. It is definitely not as difficult as some lead you to believe, it just takes some time and a little elbow grease.

Furniture Cleaning

Don't fall for the idea that "you need special cleaners" or "secret" solutions to clean your kitchen cabinets.

Cleaning Wood Kitchen Cabinets

Cleaning your kitchen cabinets also rarely depends on the type of finish that is on your cabinets - really.

Cleaning kitchen cabinets only becomes difficult when your finish is actually cracked and damaged to the point water can easily seep through the finish. If your finish is bad, you're looking at refinishing, not just cleaning.

How do your cabinets get damaged in the first place?

Light, oxidation (simply being exposed to oxygen), and physical use and abuse damage wood finishes. You can't do anything about oxidation, and very little about light (except for keeping lights off and not having many windows, but who wants that?), but you can limit the abuse and clean your cabinets when they get dirty. This helps keep your finish in good shape.

Common finishes found on kitchen cabinets include:

Conversion Finishes: Catalyzed lacquer, pre-catalyzed lacquer, conversion varnish, epoxy finish, moisture-curing polyurethane, two-part polyurethane, polyester finish, and ultraviolet-curing finish

Lacquer or Moisture Resistant Lacquer

Polyurethane

Varnish

Shellac

Today, most often your cabinet finishes will be a conversion finish or lacquer. Conversion finishes are what the cabinet industry uses, both factory built and custom built. They are fast drying, durable, very moisture resistant, and somewhat heat resistant (although candles close to the cabinets - within even 18 inches for prolonged periods of time - have been known to scorch the finish). They have been around since the 1930's. When it comes to cleaning wood kitchen cabinets, these are easy to keep clean.

Actually, you can clean all of the above finishes that may be on wood kitchen cabinets by just using a soft cloth, and mild soap and water. Gently wash your cabinets, being sure not to leave any water standing on any wood surface.

It's that simple. If your cabinets are getting a bit "dull" looking to you, you can put a lemon oil on them if you wish, however, keep in mind that if you do put a lemon oil on the finish and your cabinets ever need to be refinished, that might cause a problem in the refinishing because oil will be on the surface of the wood (and cause "fish-eye" as you try to put new finish on).

Other things to keep in mind:

Lacquer and conversion finishes dry fast, but they don't cure for almost six months. Never put lemon oil on your finish before its six months old. Cleaning wood kitchen cabinets at this stage means to only wipe down with soap and water.

It's a good idea to clean your cabinets with a good furniture polish in between times you actually wash with soap and water. Too much water can, over time, damage your finish, especially if it's not wiped up quickly.

Use a mild soap, like Dawn dishwashing liquid (it cuts grease well) or Ivory or a similar dish soap.

Murphy's Oil Soap is also a good cleaner for your kitchen cabinets. It is gentle enough to use on wood. It is made with oil and lye, which, when mixed, result in a chemical reaction to make the soap. No oil or lye is left in the finished product, so you don't have to worry about getting any oil on your cabinet finish (making any future refinishing easier).

True "oil" finishes, such as linseed oil, tung oil, or walnut oil, are rarely found on kitchen cabinets. You keep these types of finishes looking nice by reapplying the oil (actually you can use any oil, it does not necessarily have to be the same oil that was originally used) These types of cabinets may be found in antique furniture, or made by someone who was trying to get back to an "original" way of manufacturing furniture or cabinetry.

In today's cabinets, the only piece of wood that will have an actual oil finish is the bread board. Make sure you wash your bread board as needed, let it dry thoroughly, then reapply a non-toxic vegetable oil to the surface. You need to let the oil soak in, and may need to reapply and rub it in 2 or 3 times.

And remember - Have a Happy Kitchen!
